More insight than mere memoir, Doug Smith’s work captures the gentility and humility of a very different generation; a generation who saw the impending threat of Nazism as a grand opportunity to achieve boyhood aspirations, only to find themselves thrown into the hideous realities of mechanised war; a generation whose late teens and early twenties was forever stolen, displaced by horror and hardship; a generation forced by appallingly low survival rates to learn toleration for even the most insufferable of colleagues; above all, a generation for whom humour became the body armour of the day.
Doug Smith’s war took him on a journey to the skies, compelled as a pitifully young bomber pilot to confront extraordinary responsibilities for the lives and safety of his fearful crew, little more than teenagers themselves. A run of survived missions concluded with the almost inevitable fiery descent over enemy occupied territory. Doug was captured and ultimately incarcerated in the infamous Stalag Luft 3, scene of the celebrated Great Escape. The privations of the long march across Eastern Europe followed as his erstwhile captors tried to buddy-up against the perceived greater threat from the Communist East. For the returning survivors homecoming offered no respite from uneasy experience, met as they were with a general unwillingness to acknowledge their contribution or even hear their stories. Marshal “Bomber” Harris’s brutal policy to break the enemy spirit with constant lethal attack on non-military targets was already perceived as the blot that gave the lie to the politically potent myth of glory.
All who knew Doug, including we who were proud to call him father, knew him as a man of such wit, calm and gentle kindness that it beggared belief that he found it in himself to take on and mentally survive his journey; humility, humour and the majority of his torso entirely intact. To report that these recollections make compelling reading is to entirely understate the case for this book. Written by and large in the vernacular language of the day, it provides the means to escape into a world dominated by a long lost mind-set that it might do us all a great deal of good to rediscover. It is a treat for any historian, a rollercoaster for any devotee of a good yarn and, like the company of its author, the best place to be for lovers of laughter.

The Product Desacription tells the story but what a story! A most enjoyable & extremely interesting read, a tale told with humour & humility. I found it difficult to stop reading.I was so engrossed by Doug's exceptional experience, partly initially because my father was at Blackpool, Shawbury & Pershore as ground crew at that time ( I wonder if they ever met during their service at those bases), but afterwards by his remarkable desire & determination to fulfil his dream of becoming a pilot.
